Bizarre casting shenanigans

March 8, 2007 at 2:55 pm | Posted in Grey's Anatomy, TV News, Veronica Mars | 1 Comment

Earlier today, Mike Ausiello at TV Guide posted the following:

Sources confirm that Chris Lowell — that’s Veronica Mars‘ Piz to you — has been added to the cast of the in-the-works Grey’s Anatomy spin-off (or, as the lawyers over at ABC insist we call it, “The upcoming enhanced two-hour Grey’s Anatomy episode with a potential for afterlife”).

Althought this is fantastic news for Lowell and his growing legion of admirers, it probably doesn’t bode well for Veronica Mars‘ renewal chances. Also not helping matters: the impressive premiere ratings for those damn Pussycat Dolls.

Still, this is a fraktastic break for Lowell, one of the nicest, most down-to-earth young actors in the biz. Let’s hope success doesn’t corrupt his soul.

However, the link has since been pulled off the website, leaving open a number of possibilities. It could just be bad information, or it could mean that the renewal chances for Veronica Mars are grim, and the cast is looking for work. Or, Veronica Mars is fine but Chris Lowell’s leaving the show. My hope is that Chris Lowell’s casting is in second position, which means that he can do the show only if Veronica Mars agrees to let him go. Anyway, it’s all very weird.

In other spinoff news, Mike Ausiello reports (video clip) that neither Eric Dane (McSteamy) nor Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) will switch shows — both will stay on Grey’s Anatomy Classic. The news about Alex is no shocker, but McSteamy surprises me. I’d guessed that the spinoff plot would involve Addison moving back to New York and McSteamy chasing her there. Hmm.

Updated: Kristin Veitch at E! Online has the deal.  Chris Lowell was only signed for one season on Veronica Mars, so next year he’ll only show up sporadically.  (So let’s hope Piz and Veronica’s relationship is short-lived.)

  1. Hey gang, thank god you saw this too. I was starting to think I was crazy. I posted about it a couple hours ago and then people started emailing me saying that this was nowhere online. I’m glad you’re around to have seen it too. WTF does this mean?
