Another movie musical ruined

What maroon cast Meryl Streep in the movie version of Mamma Mia!?  I’ve seen that show, and it doesn’t have much of a plot, but casting Streep will not add any gravitas.  Plus, her voice is not right for the role at all.  (Trust me.  I sat through A Prairie Home Companion.)  They should’ve given the part to Kristen Chenoweth.

Adorably, Amanda Seyfried from Veronica Mars will play the daughter role.   I’m surprised she’s a singer, but I hope she’ll do well.  Pierce Brosnan is a good call, too.  Still, there’s no way I’m paying ten bucks to see Meryl Streep sing Dancing Queen.  Gross.

  1. The trouble is that Meryl (and most of the rest of the “older” cast members,) are simply too old for the roles. Donna should really be 40ish, as she had a baby as a young singer, and was then disowned by her own mother.(a brief line to that effect in the play.) Even if we can pretend that Meryl is 50, a single 30 year old having a child and struggling to raise her alone doesn’t fit the overall feel of the backstory.
