Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?February 22, 2007 at 3:14 pm | Posted in TV News | Leave a comment
The New York Times is speculating that NBC wants Jimmy Fallon to take over Conan O’Brien’s hosting gig in 2009, when Conan replaces Leno as host of the Tonight Show. I’m actually not appalled by the idea. He’s a lot better than Carson Daly, for one thing. (Eat a sandwich, Carson.) For another, I think he’d be a good interviewer. That’s one of Conan’s great strengths; he’s able to take even the most boring guests and make the conversation interesting without resorting to mocking them. In contrast, the last time I watched Carson Daly, he made some smartass comment about the musical guest’s outfit while introducing them, like, way to make your guests feel welcome, CARSON. He’s also relatively young — he’d be 35 in 2009 — and more importantly, youthful, which is a good contrast to Craig Ferguson.
Still, there’s always potential for disaster. I’ve never thought that Jimmy Fallon was the strongest comedy writer, and now that Tina Fey’s doing her own stuff, he’d have to assemble a new writing team. He’d also have to play up his goofy, nice-guy image, instead of going for that master of ceremonies-type typical talk show persona. And I hope he’ll break out the guitar every once in while.
